There is a lot of confusion around carbon monoxide and propane. One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is that propane itself creates carbon monoxide. That is not accurate. When propane equipment is installed correctly and operating the way it was designed, it burns clean. Carbon monoxide is not the fuel — it is the result of poor combustion.

Carbon monoxide forms when any fuel does not burn completely. That includes propane, natural gas, fuel oil, wood, gasoline — anything that relies on combustion. When the air-to-fuel mixture is wrong, when exhaust cannot leave the building properly, or when equipment is set up poorly, dangerous gases can be produced.

In the field, we see this happen for a few consistent reasons. Burners are not adjusted properly. Venting systems are blocked or undersized. Gas piping is installed incorrectly. Air supply is restricted in tightly sealed homes. Equipment is installed without proper commissioning. Maintenance is skipped for years. Propane appliances, especially modern high-efficiency equipment, are engineered to operate safely when installed and serviced correctly. Carbon monoxide detectors are essential and should be treated like any other life safety device. They must be installed on each level of the home, tested regularly, and replaced according to manufacturer guidelines. These devices are not optional safeguards — they are critical protection.

Mechanical systems are only as safe as the way they are designed, installed, and maintained. Reliable operation is not achieved by chance. It is the result of careful planning, skilled workmanship, and consistent attention to detail. Homeowners who understand this are far less likely to experience emergency situations or unsafe conditions.
