ERV vs HRV: UNDERSTANDING VENTILATION IN MODERN HOMES

As homes become tighter and more energy efficient, ventilation becomes more important—not less. Modern construction methods reduce air leakage, which improves efficiency, but also means fresh air is no longer entering the home naturally. Without proper ventilation, indoor air quality can decline, leading to moisture issues, stale air, and reduced comfort.
This is where ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) and HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) systems come into play. Both are designed to bring fresh air into the home while exhausting stale air, but they operate differently—and choosing the right one matters, especially in our climate.
An HRV transfers heat only. It takes warm air leaving the home and uses it to warm incoming cold air, improving efficiency during the winter. However, it does not manage moisture. In colder climates, HRVs can actually dry out the air even further, which is already a common issue during the heating season.
An ERV, on the other hand, transfers both heat and moisture. It helps retain some humidity while still providing fresh air exchange. In our region, where winters are long and dry, this makes a noticeable difference in comfort. Homes with ERVs tend to maintain more stable humidity levels, reducing dry air issues without sacrificing ventilation.
For that reason, we typically recommend ERVs for most residential applications in our climate. They provide a better balance between air quality, comfort, and efficiency.
That said, not all ERVs are built the same.
One of the key things we look for is whether the unit has a condensate drain. This is an important detail that many homeowners are not aware of. A properly designed ERV core is intended to transfer moisture between air streams. If an ERV is producing enough condensation that it requires a drain, it often indicates that the core is not effectively managing moisture the way it should.
In many cases, ERVs with drains are functioning more like HRVs with limited moisture transfer capability. This can reduce the overall benefit of installing an ERV in the first place.
Ventilation systems are not just about moving air—they are about controlling how air behaves inside the home. Proper design, equipment selection, and installation all play a role in how well these systems perform.
As homes continue to become more efficient, ventilation will only become more critical. Understanding the difference between ERV and HRV systems helps homeowners make better decisions about comfort, air quality, and long-term performance.
